- In the wake of the Orlando massacre, this forum explored allyship opportunities and intersections among Hampton Roads’ LGBTQ and Muslim populations. Our panelists included: Muhammad Rahman (Fulbright Scholar and PhD student in International Studies, President of ODU’s Muslim Student Association), Lexie Nobrega (Sophomore majoring in English Education, President of ODU Out) Captain Rajeeb Islam (Commissioner on the City of Virginia Beach’s Human Rights Commission), and Saleemah Abdul-Ghafur (Director of African Leaders Malaria Alliance, Advisory Board member for Muslims for Progressive Values and PBS’ Secret Life of Muslims, and author of Living Islam Out Loud: American Muslim Women Speak). The conversation will be moderated by Charm Bullard, Director of Education for the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities. NOTABLES: 79 attendees. The event was co-sponsored with Gay Cultural Studies, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, the Office of Intercultural Relations, the Women’s Center, the Department of Women’s Studies and the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding.
