The natural glory of Blackwater

Old Dominion University has owned Blackwater Ecological Preserve in the Zuni Pine Barrens since 1985. The preserve features the northernmost community of longleaf pine trees (some more than 100 feet tall) on the East Coast, as well as loblolly, pine and shortleaf trees - and some tasty treats. Magazine editor Philip Walzer (left) tries a wintergreen leaf that Lytton John Musselman, the Mary Payne Hogan Distinguished Professor of Botany, has picked as Barb Henley, the University's director of planned giving, watches.
