Old Dominion recently lost three members of its campus community. Learn more about their lives and contributions.

Anne Donovan, American women's basketball player, coach and ODU Hall of Famer

Old Dominion University Hall of Famer, Anne Donovan died June 13 at the age of 56.

Donovan was recognized by virtually every post season and All-American squad in the nation during her ODU career, earning Kodak All-American honors for three years and Academic All-American honors for two straight seasons.

She completed her four years at ODU with a cumulative 3.5 grade-average in leisure studies and became the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in ODU history with 2,719 points and 1,976 rebounds. She is still the NCAA's all-time shot blocker with 801.

As a Lady Monarch, Donovan helped lead ODU to a national championship in 1980 and two more Final Four appearances. Her collegiate honors culminated in 1983 when she was named the Naismith Trophy winner, which goes to the national 'Player of the Year' as selected by the nation's coaches. More

Paul L.H. Heine, former associate dean of Old Dominion University's Darden College of Education and a professor emeritus of recreation and tourism, died June 1. He was 75.

Heine joined the University's physical education department in 1972. He remained at ODU until his retirement in 2005.

Heine was an outstanding soccer player at West Chester State College, now known as West Chester University. He was a member of the team that won the 1961 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. It had a perfect 13-0-0 record during the season and was inducted into West Chester University's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Heine is survived by his wife, Carol Heine; son, Rick Heine, and daughter-in-law, Gaynor; daughter, Jodi Heine; grandchildren, Taylor, Paul and Dawson Heine, and sister, Gini Lou Appler, and her husband, Ray. (More)

Declan De Paor, retired ODU geophysics professor

Declan De Paor, a retired professor of geophysics and former director of Old Dominion University's Pretlow Planetarium, died last week.

DePaor specialized in areas including digital mapping and structural geology. He taught at Old Dominion from May 2008 until his retirement in January 2017.

De Paor was married to Carol Simpson, who served as provost at Old Dominion from 2008 to 2015. She retired as a professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences in 2017.

On his home page, he wrote that the role of a professor at a research institution is "teaching students how to do research and researching how to teach students."

His ultimate goal was to infect his students with his enthusiasm. "If you develop a passion for a subject," De Paor said, "learning becomes effortless - or at least the effort becomes invigorating, like running a marathon (which I have done 16 times!)." More
