Presidential Search

Dear Campus Community:

On May 18, John R. Broderick, Old Dominion University's eighth and longest-serving president, announced that he will retire as president in the summer of 2021 after completing his 13th year as leader of the institution.

President Broderick and First Lady Kate Broderick have been a true and long-lasting gift to Old Dominion. Their tireless efforts on behalf of the students, faculty, the Board of Visitors and the Hampton Roads community have produced much success, forged and strengthened many relationships and alliances for the university, and placed it in a position to accomplish even more in its future. President Broderick has been recognized as a national leader in the field of higher education and is beloved and admired by all who have been fortunate enough to know and work with him these past 12 years.

At its meeting on June 18, the Board of Visitors appointed the Presidential Search Committee, which will be chaired by Bruce Bradley, vice rector of the board and former publisher of The Virginian-Pilot. The 13-member committee includes representatives from the Board of Visitors, students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community. It will oversee the process with broad input from the community and assistance from a search firm specializing in identifying leaders in higher education.

The committee plans to host online forums later this summer to receive input from the campus community.

The Presidential Search Committee website includes the list of the search committee members and will be updated periodically to include information about the process, timeline, forums, committee meetings, etc.

Donna Meeks, executive secretary to the Board of Visitors, will serve as administrative assistant to the committee.

Your input is important to the process, so I hope you will engage by participating in an online forum or by emailing your thoughts to presidentialsearch@odu.edu.

Sincerely,

Kay A. Kemper '80

Board of Visitors Rector
