This course introduces students to communication theories and research in the developing contexts of early through middle childhood. The course examines the development of nonverbal communication, language and cognition, verbal communication, as well as development of children's communication competence in various relational contexts (e.g., family, friendships, significant adults, etc) and mediated contexts (e.g., child-TV interfacing).
A positive approach to children's communication is emphasized featuring the role of adults in providing children with necessary communication resources for their empowerment.
