Communication Research Methods I
3 Semester Credits
Pre-Requisites: STAT 130M and six hours of 300-400 level COMM electives.
An introduction to social-scientific research methods used to study communication. The course covers: proposing research questions/hypotheses; library research; measurement; validity & reliability; research approaches including: experiment, survey, textual analysis; data analysis (quantitative and qualitative); and reporting/presenting the outcomes of research projects.
Course intended to enhance students' abilities as consumers of communication research (e.g., develop analytical and critical thinking) as well as introducing students to various approaches and tools upon which develop their own communication research projects in future undergraduate elective courses (e.g., COMM 402, Communication Research Methods II), graduate courses, and/or in work settings in business and industry.
