Class Participation Active student participation in class discussion is both encouraged and expected. All
students should come to class prepared, having read the chapter and completed the
homework problems.
Contact Policy: My office hours are Wednesday 6-7 pm and Thursday 2-4 pm. You may also contact
me via email and phone.
Computer Access: It is anticipated that every student has access to a computer, including internet access. Students will also need an ODU email account to access many of the online course resources. If you do not currently have an ODU account, please visit this website to get one: http://season.odu.edu. Every student that is enrolled in the course must also email me a test message before the 2nd class, just so I have everyone’s email address.
Instructional Method: Lecture & discussion
Homework: Numerous homework problems will be assigned for each chapter. Homework will be reviewed in class, but will not be collected. Students should therefore come to class having completed the assigned exercises and problems. There is a strong correlation between homework completion and exam performance, thus completing all homework problems will likely improve your course grade.
Course Policies: Class attendance is expected. If you must miss class, you are responsible for any covered material. All exams will be given on the dates scheduled below, absent a weather cancellation. Make-up exams will only be allowed for students with an approved absence, received prior to the exam date. Alternatively, students that miss an examination with an acceptable excuse will have the points on the missed exam added to the final examination (final double-counted).
Examinations: Examinations will be both conceptual and problem-oriented. All examinations will be closed book, but calculators are allowed. Exams 1 – 3 will last 2 hours, and will be preceded by a review of the homework from the previous week. The final examination is a comprehensive departmental common exam required for all ACCT 201 students. It is scheduled for April 29 at 3:45 – 6:45 pm.
Quizzes: Short quizzes will be handed out in class, approximately one each week (excluding exam weeks), with a minimum of 10. All quizzes are closed book, though calculators are allowed. Only the average of the 8 best quizzes will be used in calculating a student’s grade. An absence for a quiz will result in a zero.
Student Conduct: Students are expected to be on-time, alert, and attentive during class. All cell phones are to have their ringers turned off. All provisions of the ODU Student Handbook, including provisions relating to academic integrity and classroom conduct, are incorporated by reference. A copy of the handbook may be accessed via: http://www.odu.edu/webroot/orgs/STU/stuserv.nsf/pages/student_handbook
Special Needs: In compliance with federal law, provisions will be made for students with special needs on an individual basis. The student must have been identified as “special needs” by the university and written documentation must be provided to the instructor. Provisions will be made based upon written guidelines from the university’s Office of Disability Services. All students are expected to fulfill all course requirements.
Contact Hours: Class Meetings - 45 and Assignments/Readings - 135
Minimum Grade Requirement

for admission, students must earn a grade of C or better in this course. (They must also earn C
or better in Econ202, Math 162 and Eng 110. See the current Catalog for details). Contact the
College of Business and Public Administration Undergraduate Advising Office for
information regarding exemptions to this requirement for certain transfer students.
Withdraw: The last date to withdraw from the class is March 15 (via LEO)
