STUDENT EVALUATION CRITERIA
Evaluation is based on the completion of the following criteria:
- Nutritional Supplement Advertisement
Select an advertisement from a health or bodybuilding magazine for class discussion. Analyze the claims made by the manufacturer by answering the 12 questions on page 24 of Nutrition for Health, Fitness & Sport.
- Two Mini-Review Papers
Select four topic areas to review pertaining to nutrition and physical performance or to nutrition and health, one from each of the following areas:
Carbohydrates or Fats Protein or Energy Balance and Weight Control Vitamins, Minerals, or Electrolytes and Water Lifespan Nutrition, Alcohol and Caffeine, or Consumer Nutrition
Topic ideas are presented on a separate handout. A short paper (2-4 pages) should be prepared in conjunction with the topic under discussion, such as carbohydrates in Unit 1, and be delivered orally during the discussion section of the class. The paper should utilize a minimum of three interrelated studies. Prepare a one-page abstract summary of your paper with sufficient copies for other class members, and include a list of references reviewed on the second page. Depending on class size, you may be asked to work with a partner on these reviews.
- Book Review
The book review should include the title, authors, intended audience, overview of the contents and the major points, your general criticism, and your specific criticisms, including strengths and weaknesses. Clear your chosen book with the instructor by the end of the second scheduled unit (end of September). The book should have a 1997 or later publication date and be relevant to the materials covered in the course.
- Presentation of a Convincing Argument: Working with one of your classmates, select one of the topics from the topic ideas handout (or a relevant one of your own) and develop a presentation attempting to convince your classmate with the opposite view that your viewpoint is valid. You may develop either a PRO or CON argument. The two will be presented at the same time in a "point-counterpoint" format during class.
- Case Study or Pilot Study
Case Study: Select an athlete or athletes or an individual or individuals who could benefit from nutritional counseling. Do a dietary analysis and develop an appropriate plan of action based on your analysis. Be prepared to discuss recommendations in class. Prepare a written report for the client that will be graded by the instructor (to be turned in at the time of presentation). You will need to select a case study early, within two weeks of the start of class, so that you have ample time for observation and intervention, if planned.
Pilot Study: Conduct a small pilot research study involving nutritional aspects of exercise, sport, or health. Survey type research is acceptable.
- Final Exam
There will be one short answer essay examination at the conclusion of the course designed to mimic the graduate comprehensive examination. Study guide questions will be distributed prior to the examination to help you study.
- Attendance and Participation
Since a seminar class involves a substantial amount of student participation and dissemination of knowledge, class attendance is very important and will be tracked. You should read all of the assigned materials prior to the class meeting.
