STUDENT EVALUATION CRITERIA

Evaluation is based on four written examinations (20% each for a total of 80% of the final grade) and extra-class assignments (20% of the total grade).

Exams
These are designed to reflect the knowledge base of the four major units covered. The exam content is indicated on the class schedule. All exams will be primarily multiple choice. In addition, additional quizzes on the article discussions may be given and included in the student's grade.

Extra Class Assignments
Extra-class assignments will constitute the final 20% of the grade.

One major assignment is a personal dietary analysis (30 points). For this, each student will need to keep a detailed, accurate record of his or her physical activities, food, and fluid intake for three normal consecutive days (including one weekend day and two weekdays). Using a computerized nutrient analysis system, each student will then be expected to analyze his or her diet. In addition to the computer-generated analysis, the assignment includes writing an assessment of the healthiness of the analyzed diet including the following items: nutrients that are lacking or consumed in excess, energy balance (diet vs. exercise) and weight stability, and specific dietary changes that would improve the healthiness of the diet to meet all of the current recommendations for diet and physical activity.

The second assignment is to find an article on a topic in each unit we are covering (for example, the use of Vitamin E by athletes for its antioxidant qualities for Unit 3). It can be from a newspaper, reputable magazine, journal, e-journal, or reputable on-line source. Abstracts of articles (instead of the whole article) are not acceptable. For each one, students will completely summarize the article’s contents, its implications to sports. performance, and health, and recommendations for its use based on the material covered in class. The finished summary of the article should be 1-2 pages typewritten. A copy of the article and the summary for each unit will be due one week before each unit exam and will count 5 points each (20 points total for four).

Policy For Assignments
Out-of-class assignments are expected to be completed in a timely and neat manner. They are due at the beginning of the class period of the listed due dates. Grades on late assignments will be reduced by 10% per day late and will not be accepted later than the end of the week that the assignment was due. It is acceptable for students to submit assignments via e-mail attachment by the required due date and time. A copy of the reviewed articles must still accompany the summary, but an attached scanned copy is permissible.
