Dr. Colberg-Ochs obtained a Californian higher education, beginning with a B.A. from Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA) in Dec. 1985. At Stanford, she "minored" in athletics by spending four years as the first woman student equipment manager for the Varsity Football team and becoming the first woman to hold the position of head (student) manager of an NCAA Division I Football program.

She then pursued an M.A. in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Davis, completed in Dec. 1987 with a thesis entitled "Relationship Between Differing Exercise Levels and the Self-Concept of Adolescent Insulin-Dependent Diabetics."

After working briefly as an exercise specialist in a Diabetes Treatment Center in San Francisco, CA, she earmed a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Berkeley in Dec. 1992. At Berkeley, she worked with Dr. George A. Brooks on her doctoral dissertation entitled "The Effects of Smoking on the Dependency on Blood Glucose as a Fuel During Rest and Moderate Exercise."

Professional Experience:
This current professor of exercise science once served as a Graduate Assistant during both her M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs at U.C. Davis and U.C. Berkeley. Following completion of her doctorate, she held an NIH-funded post-doctoral research position at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (1/93-9/94), where she completed clinical studies on resting metabolism in obese women and exercise metabolism in individuals with type 2 diabetes. She then began a 3-year Lecturer position at California State University, East Bay (9/94-7/97). Finally returning to the East Coast (Norfolk, Virginia), she accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Exercise Science, Sport, Physical Education, and Recreation (ESPER), now renamed Human Movement Sciences (HMS) Department, at Old Dominion University in Aug. 1997, where she was later tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in May 2003 and to full Professor in May 2009. Since arriving at Old Dominion, she has successfully collaborated on research with Dr. Aaron Vinik, Director of the Strelitz Diabetes Research Institute at Eastern Virginia Medical School (where she was appointed adjunct professor of internal medicine in 2008), colleagues in Health Sciences at ODU, and many others, receiving clinical research grants from the American Diabetes Association, the Commonwealth of Virginia Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Research Award Fund, Lifescan, Inc., and more exceeding $1,700,000.
