Dr. Colberg-Ochs obtained aCalifornian higher education, beginning with a B.A. from Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA) in Dec. 1985. At Stanford, she "minored" in athletics by spending four years as the first woman student equipment manager for the Varsity Football team and becoming the first woman to hold the position of head (student) manager of an NCAA Division I Football program.

She thenpursued an M.A. in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Davis, completed in Dec. 1987 with a thesis entitled "Relationship Between Differing Exercise Levels and the Self-Concept of Adolescent Insulin-Dependent Diabetics."

Afterworking briefly as an exercise specialist in a Diabetes Treatment Center in San Francisco, CA, she earmed a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of California, Berkeley in Dec. 1992. At Berkeley, she worked with Dr. George A. Brooks on her doctoral dissertation entitled "The Effects of Smoking on the Dependency on Blood Glucose as a Fuel During Rest and Moderate Exercise."

Professional Experience:
This current associate professor of exercise science once served as a Graduate Assistant during both her M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs at U.C. Davis and U.C. Berkeley. Following completion of her doctorate, she held an NIH-funded post-doctoral research position at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from Jan. 1993 to Sept. 1994, where she completed clinical studies on resting metabolism in obese women and exercise metabolism in individuals with type 2 diabetes. She then began a 3-year Lecturer position at California State University,East Bay (9/94-7/97). Finally returning to the East Coast (Norfolk, Virginia), she accepted a position asAssistant Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Exercise Science, Sport, Physical Education, and Recreation (ESPER) at Old Dominion University in Aug. 1997, where she was later tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in April 2003. Since arriving at Old Dominion, she has successfully collaborated on research with Dr. Aaron Vinik, Director of the Strelitz Diabetes Research Institute at Eastern Virginia Medical School, colleagues in Health Sciences, and others, receiving clinical research grants from the American Diabetes Association, the Commonwealth of Virginia Alzheimer's and Related DiseasesResearch Award Fund, and Lifescan, Inc., totaling more than $1,321,000.
