Dr. Paula Mazzer
Paula took the scenic route through academia. She started out her career as a biologist-with a bachelor's degree in biology (and a minor in history...go figure) from the University of Delaware in 1991. She then attended graduate school in marine biology at the University of Miami, intending to study fish physiology. (And was there for Hurricane Andrew in 1992.) It was during her time at UM that she discovered toxicology, and decided to get a degree in chemistry, instead. Leaving grad school temporarily, she got a job as a satellite image analyst for a fishing forecasting company for a year (ROFFS, Miami, FL), and started applying to chemistry graduate programs. She finally received a PhD in Chemistry from Kent State University in 2002. Her graduate research was on the mechanism of DNA damage by carcinogenic chromium species. She then proceeded to Ohio State University to do geochemical post-doctoral research with Dr. Patrick Hatcher. While there, she led a subproject on an NSF Environmental Molecular Science Institute grant. She came to Old Dominion University in 2005 as a biochemistry lecturer, then was hired as a tenure-track assistant professor the following year-in Biogeochemistry.
In her spare time (what spare time?), she enjoys kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking through the bits of the country that lie farthest from civilization.
Since 2008, Paula has been the advisor for the ODU ACS Student Affiliates undergraduate chemistry club. Check out our facebook page for awesome photos of our group activities (link at right). Also, our club was just written up in the National ACS's InChemistry Magazine (Nov/Dec, p. 4), so check us out there, too.
Recipient, 2011 Shining Star Award, ODU Division of Student Affairs, for:
"ongoing committment to the academic, professional, and personal
development of our students."
