Organization

Literature Review is organized into logical sections, around major ideas or themes, including an introduction, the critical examination of the literature, and a conclusion.

Literature Review is organized but is in a format differing from the suggested one.

Literature Review is not well organized and important data is difficult to locate.

Literature Review is disorganized.

Comprehensiveness

Literature review is comprehensive, including the following components:

Literature Review is missing one component

Literature Review is missing two components.

Literature Review is missing three or more components.

An introduction that describes the content of the review, the organization of the review, and the strategy used for searching the literature

Review is clearly related to the problem statement as expressed in research questions or study questions and objectives

Includes the relationship of the study to previous research

Synthesizes the literature by defining the most important aspects of the theory being examined or tested (quantitative studies) or substantiate the rationale or conceptual framework for the study (qualitative studies)

Contains a literature-based description of the research variables (quantitative studies) or potential themes or perceptions to be explored (qualitative studies)

Content is drawn from acceptable peer-reviewed journals or sound academic journals

Uses citations as necessary

Entire review is an integrated, critical essay on the most relevant and current published knowledge on the topic.
