Karin A. Orvis, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Psychology Department Old Dominion University Norfolk, VA 23529-0267 |
Hello, welcome to my webpage! I am an Assistant Professor in the I/O Program at Old Dominion University. My primary research areas of interest include employee training and development, as well as non-cognitive predictors of workplace behaviors and attitudes. My research in the area of training and development focuses on self-development, videogame-based training, and e-learning.
I received my doctorate in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from George Mason University. My consulting areas of expertise include the development and evaluation of employee training and development programs, as well as employee selection systems. Specifically, while working at the HR consulting firm, Fields Consulting Group, I developed and administered training programs and various selection measures, such as assessment centers, structured panel interviews and job knowledge exams. While living in Washington DC, I also had the opportunity to work as a research fellow at the U.S. Army Research Institute, investigating immersive, videogame-based training methodologies.
Currently, my self-development research is being funding by the National Science Foundation. Dr. Debbie Major and I, along with collaborators from Norfolk State University, are beginning a three-year project examining individual and contextual factors that influence student engagement in professional development activities available outside of the classroom. We are interested in how capitalizing on such activities (or failing to do so) may impact students' future attitudes and career intentions in the fields of computer science and engineering.
If you have any questions about my research or ODU's I/O program, please send me an email!
