Special Events
Below are special events that will allow you to obtain extra credit for the class that will be applied to your final grade. The guidelines are as follows: a) attend the event, b) obtain a chit (ticket) that confirms that you attended the event, c) submit a typed, two page summary of the event (name of the event, description of the event with names of panel members and/or speakers and their position and most important, what your learned), d) attach the chit to the paper. Each special event that you attend is worth 5 points. You can attend up to three (3) events during the semester. The paper must be submitted to the instructor no later than one week after the event or it will not be accepted. Submit it to the instructor in class or to the department secretary (BAL 7000) who will put the date on the paper and pass it on to the instructor.

Sept 21 - - Constitution and Citizenship Day Program. Open Forum and Presentation on the topic: The First Amendment on a College Campus" led by Dr. Lee Bird and Ms. Mary Beth Mackin. Location: Rector's Room in Webb Center. Time: 12:30-2 pm. (Lunch will be provided)
Sept 21 - - Constitution and Citizenship Day Program. Lecture by Dr. Lee Bird and Ms. Mary Beth Mackin on "The First Amendment on a College Campus." Location: Chandler Recital Hall in Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Building. Time: 6:30 Reception. 7 pm Lecture.

October 19 - - First Meeting of the student organization Virginia21. The purpose of the group is to lobby the legislature in Richmond to provide more resources for higher education. Time: 7:15-8:30 pm. Location: Virginia Rice Webb Room (Webb Center).
October 28 - - 2010 Congressional Elections panel sponsored by the Department of Political Science and Geography and the Graduate Program in International Studies. ODU Professors Simon Serfaty, Glen Sussman, Jesse Richman, and Kimberly Karnes will the discuss the election and implications. Dr. Bill Whitehurst will serve as moderator. Time: 12:15-1:30 pm. Location: BAL 1012.

November 3 - - ODU Political Science Professor, Steve Yetiv, will give a talk on "The World of Oil: The Challenge of Global Oil Dependence." Reception: 3:30 pm. Lecture: 4 pm. Location: BAL 9024.

December 2 - - The Blue Planet Forum presents "Climate Change and the U.S. Navy" featuring Rear Admiral David Titley, Ph.D., Oceanographer of the Navy and Director, Task Force Climate Change. Time: 6:30 pm. Location: The Ted, Big Blue Room.
