Professor Sussman received his Ph.D. in political science from Washington State University. He joined the faculty at Old Dominion University in 1992 where he teaches undergraduate courses in the field of American politics.  As a Faculty Affiliate in the Graduate Program in International Studies (GPIS), he offers two seminars - - Global Environmental Policy and the Politics of Climate Change: Comparative Perspectives.  As a Faculty Affiliate in the Mitigation and Adaptation Institute (MARI), he is involved in teaching and research about climate change, climate politics, and sea level rise.

Professor Sussman's most recent book is American Politics and the Environment, 2nd ed (SUNY Press, Spring 2016) with Byron W. Daynes and Jonathan West.. 

He has been working on  a new project, Climate Change Politics and Policies in America:  Historical and Modern Documents in Context (2 Volumes) 

Professor Sussman is engaged in a survey research project that involves state legislators in coastal states and their political orientations about environmental policy and sea level rise.

He also updated his 2013 and 2014 research essay "Political Response To Climate Change in the USA and Canada," for publication in The USA and Canada (Routledge, Europa, 2015).

Professor Sussman's scholarship and professional activities include 6 books, over 100 journal articles, book chapters, professional papers and research essays and approximately 100 lectures, interviews, panels, and speaking engagements. 

He served two terms as chair of an eighteen member department, 2000-2006.
