Biography

Dr. White is an Assistant Professor of Management and International Business in the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University where teaches international business in the PhD, MBA, and undergraduate programs. He also teaches business policy and strategy to undergraduate students. Dr. White is also a Non-Resident Research Fellow at the Asian Institute of Management's Policy Center in the Philippines and an Honorary Professor at Hebei Normal University in China. He was previously an Assistant Professor of International Business and Strategy in the School of Management at the University of Michigan-Flint.    

Dr. White's expertise lies in international business strategy. His research studies the interaction between regulatory institutions and multinational enterprise (MNE) strategic behavior and performance outcomes, primarily in Southeast Asian and emerging market contexts. Within this domain he investigates: (1) phenomenon associated with MNE foreign subsidiary nonmarket strategies (e.g., business-government interaction), and (2) MNE cooperative relationships as they relate to formal contracting and conflict resolution strategies. Dr. White is currently conducting a multi-year research study, with colleagues from the Asian Institute of Management and Ateneo de Manila University, investigating the influence of regulatory institutions on (both public and private) electric cooperative performance outcomes in the Philippines. He has also performed extensive fieldwork in the Philippines surveying senior executives of MNE foreign subsidiaries. Dr. White's research has been published or is forthcoming in the Journal of World Business, International Business Review, Journal of International Management, Thunderbird International Business Review, International Journal of Conflict Management, as well as leading international law journals. He is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Asia Business Studies, as well as the Journal of Asia-Pacific Business, and serves as a reviewer for a number of journals including the Journal of Management Studies, Journal of World Business, International Business Review, Journal of Business Research, and the International Journal of Conflict Management.  

Dr. White has received several honors and awards, including the Best Reviewer Award from the Academy of International Business, the Best Reviewer Award from the Academy of Management (International Management Division), and the Golden Apple Award in Teaching Excellence from the University of Michigan-Flint. Dr. White studied Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan on an Academic Language Exchange Scholarship at Feng Chia University and was an alternate for the prestigious Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (Ministry of Education) Chinese Language Scholarship.

Dr. White earned a B.A. in History (emphasis on Asia) from the University of Alabama in 1995 and a certificate in Mandarin Chinese from Feng Chia University in Taichung, Taiwan in 1997. He went on to earn a J.D. in Law and Certificate in International Law from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2001; an LL.M. in International Commercial Law from the Graduate School of Law at Emory University in 2002; an MBA in General Management from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2006; and a Ph.D. in International Business (emphasis in international strategy) from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2008. He was also a post-graduate student in Asian studies at the Center for Asian Studies, University of Alabama.

Before attending the University of Texas at El Paso, Dr. White worked as a Research Fellow and Visiting Professor of International Business Law and Global Commerce at Hebei Normal University, and as an Adjunct Professor of International Business Law and Global Commerce at the Shijiazhuang College of Law and Commerce, both in Shijiazhuang, China. He was also appointed by the municipal government as an Economic Adviser to the Shijiazhuang National Hi-Tech Industry Development Zone in the China. During graduate school he interned with the United States Agency for International Development (Asia and Near East Bureau) in Washington, D.C. and taught English as a second language in Taiwan. Dr. White has consulted on variety of projects concerning MNE nonmarket strategies, foreign direct investment, and WTO rules and policies in Southeast Asia and the China. He has studied, worked, and lived in the Philippines, China, Taiwan, and Hungary.

Dr. White is a member of the Academy of International Business, Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, and Asia Academy of Management. He is a member of the Teaching Theme Committee (TTC) for the Academy of Management.
