CV

Welcome to my webpage and thanks for visiting me. I've been a member of the I/O psychology program at Old Dominion University since its founding and have had contact with virtually every one of its nearly 100 Ph.D. graduates. In addition to my role in the I/O program I also serve as a faculty member in the Institute of Asian Studies at Old Dominion University.

I earned a Ph.D. from Michigan State University with concentrations in ecological psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, and social psychology. I like to use psychological theory and research to study organizations and make them more effective. My teaching, research, and consulting focus on three areas that are often intertwined: (1) personal and organizational transformation, (2) technology as an enabler of organizational performance, (3) cross-cultural I/O psychology and cultural diversity, with emphasis on China.

My work has been supported by several organizations including federal agencies such as NASA, National Science Foundation Computer, Information Science & Engineering Directorate, and Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers Program, and the U.S. Department of State Fulbright Program; military organizations such as the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Army; global firms such as Shell, Hewlett Packard, Motorola, Merrill Lynch, and AT&T; and I/O psychology consulting firms such as Personnel Decisions, Inc. (PDI).

I've served as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of High Technology Management Research since its establishment in 1989. I also serve on the editorial board of The Open Management Journal, a new online, peer reviewed journal devoted to international research and theory in management.

I'm passionate about studying and teaching tai chi chuan (tai chi for short), which is an ancient Chinese system of meditation and psychophysiological self-regulation developed from Daoism, China's oldest indigenous philosophy, and practiced to cultivate health and harmony. I teach tai chi and Daoism at Tidewater Tai Chi Center and in workshops around the country. I am currently applying these principles to theory and practice in I/O psychology.
