Towards Next Generation Risk Management

Emergent Risk Initiative

Text Box: A recent presentation on dependency modeling at the American Society for Engineering Management

Gone are the days when stove-piped management of risk is sufficient. Recent events all over the globe have shown the need for a systems-of-systems and enterprise-systems approach in dealing with modern-day emerging risks.

The Emergent Risk Initiative (ERI), based at Old Dominion University, envisions the creation of the next generation body of knowledge in risk management for current and future systems and organizations characterized by uncertainty, emergence, complexity,  and interdependence.

MISSION: To prepare future researchers, educators, practitioners, and entrepreneurs to the challenges of managing risks in the ever-changing global environment

OBJECTIVES:

1. RESEARCH: To bridge the bodies of knowledge in engineering, business, public policy, and other disciplines towards managing emerging risks

2. EDUCATION: To provide the highest quality learning and training contents in managing emerging risks

3. OUTREACH: To develop next generation tools and techniques for today’s risk managers
