HOW TO CITE INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNET - PLEASE USE THIS LINK !

Quick links to Database instructions

 Factiva (Mgmt 485)

 Factiva (Mgmt 427)

(locate articles in business periodicals!)

 Thomson ONE Banker

 (find financial statements)

IBISWorld

Industry information database

   Game Theory

SEC (U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission)

 (find the 10-k)

 Calculators:  Mortgage, Retirement, Breakeven...etc

Databases at our Library:   (Your ODU id number will give you access to these databases)   Be sure you know how to cite internet sources: take careful notes about where/how you accessed the information. At the bottom of this webpage,  I have provided some hints to guide you in your internet and database research.

The databases explained below are available at the  ODU Library Business & Economy database list

FACTIVA (for Mgmt 485):

Factiva is an online database available through the ODU library.   You can use Factiva to find an article published in Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Fortune, Forbes.

Click here to visit the ODU library databases to select Factiva

Follow these steps (for Management 485 term paper:   (Please scroll down for Factive assistance for Management 427.)

1. change the date to the past three (3) months. (This limits the search to articles published fairly recently)

 2.  Insert (type) the name of the specific publication and click on the round button on the right side of the box.  The page will reload showing a list of publications that have a similar name.  Select the exact  publication you want by clicking on the name in the list.  (In this case: The Wall Street Journal).   You can search in several periodicals at one time.  After you have selected the first periodical, type in the next name (e.g., BusinessWeek).   Just as before, click on the name that shows on the list.

3.  Insert your search terms.  Factiva is not as forgiving as Google -- you need to be very precise.    If you want Factiva to search for mergers OR acquisitions, you must include the word "or."   You can include several search terms at one time. For example, you can enter the following search terms:  "merger or acquisition or acquire or bankruptcy or CEO change."  (However, you would not use quotation marks in the search box)

4. (scroll down to next screen picture for further instructions)

Factiva (continued).    You can print or email the list of articles;  Or you may click on an article title and read the article.

If you prefer to read several articles at one time, you may check several boxes  (on the left  side of the titles).

Be sure to read your course syllabus carefully  if you are selecting an article for a particular assignment!   For example, if the assignment requires that the firm be a U.S. public traded company, you will need to be very careful as you skim articles and select an article.  It is wise to do a quick search in the SEC (U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission) files to see if a particular company has a recent 10-k on file at the SEC.

For other assignments, if you are permitted to use a foreign company (non-U.S. firm) as the main subject of the paper,  look for  a 20-f filing at the SEC.  A 20-f  frequently has excellent company information.

Then,  (shown in the circle) you can click on the  "eye" (to view the article);  the envelope (to email the article to yourself); the printer (to format for printing) or the disk (to save the file)

Factiva (for Mgmt 427)        Click here to visit the ODU library databases to select Factiva

IBISWorld

Click here to visit the ODU library - (select IBIS World from the list of databases)

IBISWorld  has industry information using Porter's five forces.  Helpful, but in my experience this is not always the most current information.  The IBIS reports may have omitted critical information that is available elsewhere!

WARNING!   You may NOT base your entire Industry Analysis on information from IBISWorld.

You MUST ALSO USE THE FIRM'S 10-K REPORT.    Paper that rely entirely on copying or paraphrasing from IBIS World will not be acceptable (i.e., that means the paper will earn a failing grade).

Thus, you may use information from IBISWorld, but you are also expected to write your own analysis.

Thomson ONE Banker -  -

Click here to visit the ODU library - (select Thomson ONE Banker from the list of databases)

Type the name or the ticker of the company in the upper left box.      Select the company from the list (be sure you select the correct firm!).   Then, if you click on "financials" (in the blue menu across the left menu on the page), you'll have the firm's financial statements. In addition, there's an option to select the financial ratios!

Thomson ONE Banker has recently redesigned their website. Instructions for locating information in Thomson ONE will be discussed in class.

U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission:

SEC WEBSITE:    www.sec.gov

This is where you'll find the 10k for a U.S. publicly traded corporation.   (The 10k is the annual report filed with the SEC).     EDGAR is the name of the system at the SEC.

On the SEC webpage, select "Search for Company Filings"  (you'll find it on the left side of the page, towards the middle -- it is under the heading "Filings & Forms  (EDGAR)"

On the next page, select "Company or fund name..."

On the following page, you 'll see a box in which you can enter a company name.  You'll have to be very precise.  Edgar is not very forgiving of a spelling error or a typing error.  And, EDGAR has its own idea of what a company name really is.  For example, if you were researching Disney.. Edgar knows the firm as "Walt Disney."  If you only type "DIsney" in the box, Edgar is confused and cannot find the files.

 Yahoo Finance -

Yahoo Finance is also a good source for financial information; available at the Yahoo website;  click on the finance link.

Financial calculators:

KJE Computer Solutions, LLC has a wonderful webpage:  www.dinkytown.net

They include calculators for mortgages, loans, retirement. business (even breakeven analysis and financial ratios!),  savings, debt, and more.   Well worth a visit.

www.bankrate.com  also has calculators:  (click on the "calculator" selection at the top right of the page.

Game Theory    Game theory.net - a wonderful site by  Mikhael Shor

Citing information from the internet & online databases in your paper

You will need to keep track of WHO/WHAT is the source of the information you found on the web.   On each webpage you access,  take note as to what company created the webpage, the date you accessed the information and the exact webpage you used (web address).

Data, facts, and opinions from various sources:  Sometimes information is not quoted, but you are providing secondary information in your paper.  (Secondary information is information that you did not personally collect).  You need to identify the source of the information (in your paper) immediately after presenting the information.  The end of the report willl include additional detailed information as to the identity and location of the source of the information.

This means that you need to keep a detailed record of the precise web page as to where you found the information, the owner of the website, the date the web page was created or modified (this is usually at the bottom of the web page) and the date you found the information on the web and the exact web address

Factiva  is owned by Dow Jones & Reuters.  If you find a firm's financial statements on Factiva, your paper should indicate that the financial information is from the Factiva database.   As previously mentioned, you should also include (in the reference list) the actual date you accessed the information.     More information about citing your sources is provided at the webpage "citing other authors."
