Dr. Schwitzer’s new textbook (co-authored with Dr Larry Rubin),  Diagnosis and Treatment Planning for Mental Health Professionals: A Popular Culture Casebook Approach, is available from Sage Publications in 2012!

Dr. Schwitzer is a Professor of Counseling, Department of Counseling & Human Services, Darden College of Education, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA. He teaches master’s and doctoral students in counseling, college counseling, college student affairs, higher education leadership, and community college leadership. Prior to faculty work at ODU, he received his graduate degrees in Counseling Psychology and worked in university counseling and psychological services at Virginia Commonwealth University, The University of Texas at Austin, Tulane University, and James Madison University.

Dr. Schwitzer is Editor of the In Practice Department of About Campus Magazine; an expert reviewer for the Journal of American College Health  and Journal of College Student Development; and member of the Book and Media Editorial Board of the American College Personnel Association. He is past editor of the Journal of College Counseling and past Chair of the Council of Journal Editors of the American Counseling Association.

Some of his recognitions include: the Ralph M. Berdie Memorial Award for Research and Scholarship in the Field of College Student Affairs (American Counseling Association), Outstanding Professional Contribution to Knowledge Award, and Meritorious Service Award (American College Counseling Association), and Darden College of Education Tonelson Outstanding Faculty Award (Old Dominion University).

He has been actively involved in research and scholarship pertaining to college and university student adjustment, development, learning, and counseling for about 20 years. He has produced around 50 total publications – including about 40 journal articles, 3 books, book chapters, magazine and newspaper articles, and a skills and techniques DVD. Included are articles appearing in Journal of Counseling & Development, Journal of American College Health, Journal of College Student Development, Measurement & Evaluation in Counseling & Development, NASPA Journal, About Campus Magazine, and others.

He is an accomplished counselor educator, and co-author of the texts, Skills and Tools for Today’s Counselors and Psychotherapists (with Ed Neukrug, Thompson Brooks/Cole Publications), and Promoting Student Learning and Student Development at a Distance (with Julie Ancis &
Nina Brown, ACPA Publications).

In addition to extensive college counseling center work, his past professional experience is rounded out by private psychological practice and university
work in residence life, career services, and academic advising. Dr. Schwitzer is a licensed clinical psychologist who provides independent consultation
and training services, and is available for keynotes, workshops, and other professional activities.
