~Welcome to the Institute for Community Justice~

~Old Dominion University~

The Institute for Community Justice is an interdisciplinary group of faculty, social service and criminal justice personnel, and community leaders who are working together to increase awareness about and generate solutions to social problems related to economic disadvantage, inequality, and public safety.

In line with the University's strategic plan, we seek to strengthen the relationship between the University and the community. For example, our goals include:

  • Facilitating and conducting research and evaluation that reflect the needs of our community
  • Creating and providing opportunities for discussion among scholars, community leaders, citizens, and local agencies
  • Addressing economic, educational, health care, recreational and public safety needs in our community
  • Developing and advocating data driven, evidence-based policies and programs

Recent work has focused on prisoner reentry, the overrepresentation of minorities in the juvenile justice system (Disproportionate Minority Contact/Confinement), alternatives to incarceration, community policing, and health issues for young women.

If you are interested in getting involved with the Institute's activities, please contact Allison Chappell (achappel@odu.edu; 757-683-4041) or Ruth Triplett (rtriplet@odu.edu) at ODU.
