Rare Osa Pulchra Blooms in Kaplan Orchid Conservatory
Stephen Urick, who directs the Kaplan Orchid Conservatory, displays a very rare Osa pulchra plant that was blooming Tuesday, July 15, at the new $2.1 million facility on the ODU campus. The plant, a member of the coffee family, is found in the wild only on the Osa peninsula in Costa Rica, where only eight such plants remain.

Adrian Gheorghe, the Batten Endowed Chair in system of systems engineering at Old Dominion University, is part of a team of critical infrastructure experts who have won a $60,000 grant from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to organize and present an Advanced Research Workshop later this year on "Energy Security in the Black Sea Area."

Distance Learning Receives Two International Awards
Old Dominion University's Office of Distance Learning, in conjunction with Katherine Kersey, ODU professor of early childhood education, has received two internationally competitive awards, the 2008 Bronze Telly Award and the 2008 Videographer Award, for their multimedia production work on the childhood development training program "101's: A Guide to Positive Discipline (Ages 5-12)."
