Declaration on Racism
by President Roseann Runte
April 10, 2003 -- "End Racism Day"

Whereas this nation was founded on the principle that all people are created equal, and racism, classism, creedism, heterosexism, and sexism are the belief in the superiority of a particular race, economic or social class, creed, sex, or sexual preference expressed through prejudice and antagonism toward others;

Whereas this is an academic community dedicated to learning, to sharing knowledge, discoveries, ideas, wisdom, and lessons from our past demonstrate that understanding of others is key to peaceful coexistence;

Whereas the United Nations declared tolerance to be a quality for which all peoples should strive, and we are a community representative of the peoples of the world;

We hereby resolve to dedicate ourselves to harmonious coexistence, to respect for others and their right to express their opinions. We respect the standards of polite conversation. We reaffirm the quality of all people, men and women, of all races, of all creeds, of all social and economic backgrounds, or sexual preference.All people who have met the standards at this university and who follow the regulations, are equal in the eyes of their professors and their peers. All have the right to study here without prejudice, free from antagonism.

We pledge ourselves on this 10th day of April 2003 to be a model community for our country and for the edification of future generations.
