No Hate, we must learn to Know Love"
Declaration
on Racism
by President Roseann
Runte
April 10, 2003 --
"End Racism Day"
Whereas this
nation was founded on the principle that all people are created
equal, and racism, classism, creedism, heterosexism, and sexism
are the belief in the superiority of a particular race, economic
or social class, creed, sex, or sexual preference expressed
through prejudice and antagonism toward others;
Whereas this is an academic
community dedicated to learning, to sharing knowledge, discoveries,
ideas, wisdom, and lessons from our past demonstrate that understanding
of others is key to peaceful coexistence;
Whereas the United Nations
declared tolerance to be a quality for which all peoples should
strive, and we are a community representative of the peoples
of the world;
We hereby resolve to dedicate
ourselves to harmonious coexistence, to respect for others and
their right to express their opinions. We respect the standards
of polite conversation. We reaffirm the quality of all people,
men and women, of all races, of all creeds, of all social and
economic backgrounds, or sexual preference.All people who have
met the standards at this university and who follow the regulations,
are equal in the eyes of their professors and their peers. All
have the right to study here without prejudice, free from antagonism.
We pledge ourselves on this
10th day of April 2003 to be a model community for our country
and for the edification of future generations.
