Hugo A. Owens African-American Cultural Center
The mission of Hugo A. Owens African American Cultural Center, often referred to as "The House", is to serve the cultural, intellectual, psychological, and sociological needs of both the Black and non-Black community at Old Dominion University. In addition to providing a diversity of programs and services, the Cultural Center acknowledges the intellectual and social heterogeneity among Black students, seeks to foster interest in Black culture as a major force in a pluralistic society, and maintains on-going cooperative relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community. Supported Programs
Black History Month Old Dominion University celebrates the contributions of African descendants during the February Black History Month observance. Noted Black History author Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926 to celebrate the achievements of African Americans. In 1976 this became known as Black History Month. The African Cultural Center staff along with student organizations and community groups host a variety of events that highlight Black culture, history and tradition. Read more
