The Paul W. Kirk Jr Memorial Lecture for Wetlands Ecology featuring Karen McKee and Irv Mendelssohn
"Coastal Wetlands and Sea-Level Rise: What Have We Learned?"

Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.
North Cafeteria, Webb University Center

Irv Mendelssohn and Karen McKee have slogged through marshes and swamps all over the world and conducted research in beautifully unique, but disappearing coastal wetlands for 40 years.

Dr. Mendelssohn is Professor Emeritus and Research Professor in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University. He received a M.S. in Marine Sciences from the College of William and Mary and a Ph.D. in Botany from North Carolina State University. He is a fellow and Merit Awardee of the Society of Wetland Scientists.. Dr. Mendelssohn's recent research emphasizes restoration and sustainability of coastal wetlands, causes of vegetation dieback in coastal marshes, and effects of multiple stressors on the ecology and restoration of coastal wetlands.

Dr. McKee is Scientist Emeritus with the U.S. Geological Survey and an adjunct in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University. She received a M.S. in Botany from North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. in Botany from Louisiana State University. Dr. McKee is a fellow of the Society of Wetland Scientists. Her research with the USGS focused on effects of elevated CO2, sea-level rise, and hurricanes on wetlands around the world. She is the author of, The Scientist Videographer, which promotes science communication by teaching scientists and students how to use video to tell their science stories.

They founded The Wetland Foundation, that provides travel grants to students in wetland science to attend conferences and conduct field studies. Through this foundation, they hope to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

Event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.
