49th Street Closures & Resurfacing

The City of Norfolk will be resurfacing 49th Street from Hampton Blvd to Powhatan Ave. This work is planned for July 8 - 18, 2009. On July 8 - 49th Street will be closed right at the intersection with Hampton Blvd. Access to Lots 5 & 8 will be via Bluestone coming from the West. July 9-11 - 49th Street will be closed between Bluestone up to the entrance to Lot 8. Access to Lots 5 & 8 will be off Hampton Blvd. during this timeframe. During this time several crosswalks will be removed from 49th Street. With the new pavement there will be 3 crosswalks on 49th Street between Hampton Blvd & Bluestone - these include the intersections at Hampton Blvd & Bluestone and a third crosswalk between Constant Hall and Visual Arts at the entrance to the new Game Day Facility at Foreman Field.

From July 14-18 the contractor will be milling the old asphalt to remove the top layer and paving with new asphalt.  There will always be at least one lane of traffic open with traffic control.

49th street will be partially closed beginning Wednesday, May 28th (additional information)

Update: In order to complete paving the newly configured Parking Lot #8, Lots #5 and #8 will be closed to incoming traffic at 5:00p.m. this Friday and will remain closed through Sunday evening. Personnel who park in Lots #5 and #8 are asked to remove their cars from both Lots #5 and #8 by 6:00p.m. Friday evening so SB Ballard Construction may begin work at that time. Once weekend work commences, the exits to both lots will be blocked. Personnel who need to enter any of the buildings bordering these lots over the weekend will have to park in Lot #9 or elsewhere on campus and walk to their destination. We apologize for the inconvenience this closure may cause, but doing this work over a weekend is the least disruptive course of action for the campus community.
