Old Dominion Among Top 5 Percent in Prestigious Worldwide Ranking

By Brendan O'Hallarn

Old Dominion University has made it into an elite global ranking of the world's top higher education institutions.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings list Old Dominion in the 500 to 600 range of more than 1,000 institutions worldwide. In all, 128 U.S. universities made the list, which is identified as "an elite 5 percent of the world's higher education institutions," according to Times Higher Education.

"Being ranked on this list and in the company of other great universities shows the value Old Dominion University brings to the Hampton Roads region and the entire world, for that matter," said Provost Austin O. Agho.

The ranking measures factors such as teaching, research, international outlook and knowledge transfer.

"This ranking demonstrates that our faculty members fully embrace and balance ideals of teaching, research and globalization," Agho said. "It is one thing to be recognized for teaching, another thing to be recognized for research and another to be recognized for our international outlook. Excelling in all three areas is what makes an institution a world-class university."

Universities in Old Dominion's peer group include the University of Arkansas, Oklahoma State University and Louisiana State.

The University of Oxford edged the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for the top spot for the 2016-17 year.

The rankings use 13 performance indicators, grouped into five categories. Institutions are excluded if they do not teach at the undergraduate level or their research output is below a certain threshold.

The full list of ranked schools is viewable at the Times Higher Education World University Rankings website.
