Earnest, who joined the ODU faculty in 2004 and was awarded tenure and promotion to associate professor in 2009, will assume his new role on July 25.

"A superb scholar, teacher and university citizen, Dr. Earnest will be an asset to the leadership team of the college," said Charles Wilson, dean of the College of Arts and Letters.

The College of Arts and Letters' Doctoral Mentoring Award was given to Earnest this year. He has also received the Robert L. Stern Award for Outstanding Teaching (2013) from the College of Arts and Letters and the Instructional Technology Teaching Award (2006) from ODU.
