President Broderick Ranked 7th on Inside Business “Power List” of Regional Leaders

Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick is ranked seventh on the 2014 "Power List," an annual ranking of the 75 most influential figures in Hampton Roads by Inside Business, the region's largest business journal.

Broderick, ODU's eighth president, moved up 11 spots from last year on the list, which is compiled by the editorial and senior management staff of Inside Business. The journal recognized Broderick's leadership impact in reshaping the area's largest public doctoral research institution through entrepreneurship, capital improvements, fundraising and economic development.

"One of the most significant events for the school since last spring was the announcement that alumnus Mark Strome and his family have donated $11 million to help integrate and nurture entrepreneurship throughout the university," the publication wrote.

Broderick told Inside Business that the donation, the second largest in ODU history, was significant, "not only in terms of the donation, but also programmatically, to know that that's going to be a part of our curriculum and our fabric here going forward."

The publication also wrote about Broderick's implementation of the university's 20-year master plan, "which will yield a new freestanding dining hall, residences, a football field and more." Broderick told Inside Business that the chemistry laboratory building to be constructed as part of the master plan "will probably be the most significant capital project we've ever taken on with the state's help."

In an editorial introducing this year's "Power List," Inside Business publisher Ed Power said compiling a list of 75 leaders who shape and influence Hampton Roads was difficult.

"Fortunately for Hampton Roads, the community enjoys a surfeit of civic-minded business leaders and citizens increasingly working in unison to place this region at the forefront of the metropolitan revolution. That's what the staff of Inside Business concluded when they assembled this year's 'Power List,'" Power wrote.

Two other ODU officials - Vice President for University Advancement Alonzo Brandon and Professor Vinod Agarwal - joined Broderick on this year's "Power List."

Brandon, a new entrant on the list, was ranked No. 22 by Inside Business for his work leading ODU's fundraising efforts and for his service to the community.

Agarwal, a professor of economics and director of ODU's Economic Forecasting Project, was selected as one of the region's most prominent economists.
