Website Ranks ODU a ‘Top College’ in Virginia for Future Service Members

Old Dominion University has been recognized as a "Top College" in Virginia for future service members by the website College Database.

The website ranks ODU fifth in Virginia for future service members in the state, citing the school's affordable tuition rate and its Army and Naval ROTC programs.

"With the cost of college a concern for many families, it¹s important for students to find an affordable post-secondary option with demonstrated academic excellence. However, it¹s equally important that students interested in service have the opportunity to explore military programs while working toward a degree," the website states.

With nearly 25 percent of its students military affiliated, and located in the military-rich Hampton Roads region, ODU caters to students seeking to serve in the military through its ROTC programs, distance learning options and multidisciplinary curriculum.

Many high-ranking military service members chose Old Dominion as their university and credit its innovative academic programs and dedicated faculty as integral to their educational and career successes. Notable military alumni of the school include Lt. Col. Michael J. Bloomfield, USAF ('93, '01H); Rear Adm. Frank M. Dirren Jr., USN ('81); Adm. William J. Fallon, USN ('82); Gen. Benjamin Griffin, USA ('69); Brig. Gen. Kathleen M. Gainey, USA ('78); Lt. Gen. Henry Osman, USMC ('69); and Col. Mary Maniscalco-Theberge, USA ('78).

To identify the top Virginia colleges for service members, the College Database looked for four-year, degree-granting institutions with at least two ROTC programs, and in-state tuition of less than $20,000 per year. Private and for-profit colleges were excluded from the rankings.
