Old Dominion’s MSVE Students to Present Research at Annual Capstone Conference

Senior modeling, simulation and visualization engineering (MSVE) students at Old Dominion will participate in the annual Capstone Conference on Thursday, April 11, at the university's Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC).
A total of 74 authors from 10 different ODU academic departments will present 44 different papers or presentations at the daylong event, joined by four presenters from colleges and universities outside ODU, including Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China.
Students will present their research to an audience of fellow students, faculty, judges and other distinguished guests. There are seven presentation tracks: Medical and Health Care Modeling; Science and Engineering; Visualization, Gaming and Virtual Reality; Training and Education; Business and Industry; Homeland Security and Military; and Transportation.
These presentations afford students the opportunity to share their innovative research with members of the M&S community, representing academic, industry and government backgrounds.
"This event is an invaluable experience for them," said John Sokolowski, executive director of VMASC. "It provides a venue to highlight what they have been doing and also builds their confidence in presenting research to a large audience of industry, government and academia representatives. It prepares them for the future, where in many cases they will have to formally present their work."
Joseph P. Ruddy, president and CEO of Virginia International Terminals Inc. in Norfolk, will be the keynote speaker for the capstone conference. Ruddy is responsible for VIT terminal operations, engineering and maintenance, and information technology. He is the past chairman of the Hampton Roads Shipping Association.
Awards for best paper and best presentation in each track will be presented, along with an overall conference award - the Gene Newman Award for Excellence in M&S Research. This award was established in recognition of Newman's tireless efforts in advancing modeling and simulation education, research and development. He played a significant role in the creation of VMASC by realizing the need for credentialed experts in the M&S workforce in the military and in industry. Newman helped arrange the first large military contract for Old Dominion University in the then-emerging research field of modeling and simulation, with the agency now known as Joint Forces Command. His foresight has impacted both the economic development and the high level of expertise in the M&S community of Hampton Roads.
