Classical Music Duo to Perform for Diehn Concert Series Feb. 20

Cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han, who rank among the most esteemed and influential classical musicians in the world today, will open the spring 2012 edition of Old Dominion's Diehn Concert Series on Monday, Feb. 20.

Their performance will begin at 8 p.m. in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Center for the Performing Arts. Earlier in the day, they will conduct a master class at 2 p.m. in the recital hall, which is free and open to the public.

The talent, energy, imagination and dedication Finckel and Han bring to their multifaceted endeavors as concert performers, recording artists, educators, artistic administrators and cultural entrepreneurs go unmatched. The Wall Street Journal has called them "America's power couple of chamber music."

In high demand year after year among chamber music audiences worldwide, the duo has appeared each season at the most prestigious venues and concert series across the United States, Mexico, Canada, the Far East and Europe to unanimous critical acclaim. Beyond the duo's recital activities, Finckel also serves as cellist of the Grammy Award-winning Emerson String Quartet.

Reviews of past performances have spoken glowingly about the duo's music. A New York Times reviewer wrote: "Mr. Finckel and Wu Han gave eloquent and deeply committed performances. He played with a deep and burnished tone and she with a sparkling virtuosity."

The following appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times: "When a pair of genuine artists explodes on the stage, exuding not only glamour and theatrical flair but also superb musical insight, the audience's thrill is twofold."

Tickets for the concert are $10 for students and $15 for general admission.

An endowment established at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, made possible by a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. F. Ludwig Diehn, funds the concert series.
