ODU Is Top 100 in Research Expenditures for 18 Disciplines
The latest research and development (R&D) expenditures data released by the National Science Foundation (NSF) show that Old Dominion University attained Top 100 rankings in 18 academic areas and stands now at 105th in the country for total R&D expenditures among public institutions, 25 positions higher than it was eight years ago.
Mohammad A. Karim, the ODU vice president for research, said that during the past eight years the university also has moved up 35 positions in R&D to 146th in the country among all institutions, both public and private. During that same period in another category for universities with no medical schools, ODU gained 16 positions to 55th.
Grants and contracts that the university receives make these expenditures possible.
Top 100 academic categories in total R&D expenditures at ODU are business/management (17), civil engineering (70), computer science (87), economics (79), education (23), electrical engineering (29), engineering (88), environmental science (82), humanities (45), mathematics (71), mechanical engineering (29), non-science/non-engineering (43), oceanography (30), physics (97), political science (85), psychology (96), social science (61), and visual and performing arts (7).
In federal R&D expenditures, ODU had10 academic areas that cracked the Top 100, and four of them were new this year - civil engineering (76), environmental, (100), mathematics (74) and social science (82). Others were education (36), electrical engineering (41), engineering (97), mechanical engineering (39), non-science and non-engineering (61) and oceanography (36).
