Recent Finance Graduate Featured in GEICO National Recruiting Video

Dorothy Rivers, a recent finance graduate of Old Dominion University's College of Business and Public Administration (CBPA), is featured in a national recruiting video by insurance giant GEICO.

The video, "GEICO is the Place to Be for Grads," features Rivers ('10) speaking about her experience in GEICO's Emerging Leaders program. The three-minute video features interviews with young GEICO employees, speaking about the misconceptions they had about the company before starting work.

"I was nervous about the corporate environment, because it was my first 'big girl' job," Rivers says in the video. She was one of two of 2,500 employees in GEICO's Virginia Beach regional office selected to appear in the video. The video is on the GEICO Careers website and can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKhRkR7NOgc.

"I show the video to all my classes and tell them that two years ago, Dorothy was sitting in my Intro to Risk Management and Insurance class just like they are now, and now is on the rocket to the top of a major corporation. I'm very proud of her," said Michael McShane, assistant professor of risk management and insurance in the CBPA. He is also the director of ODU's Insurance and Financial Services Center (IFC) and co-founder of the Emergent Risk Initiative at ODU (ERI@ODU).

Rivers and two other recent CBPA grads spoke at a recent meeting of the student Finance Club. Rivers, David McFarland (Finance '11) and Jessica Hemsley (Marketing '12) described their experiences at GEICO, and the programs that have accelerated their careers.

"I was so proud to see our recent CPBA grads talk to a jam-packed Finance Club," McShane said. "At least 100 students attended. These three students have been out of ODU for two years or less and are on the management fast track at GEICO."

ODU's IFC aims to serve as an intermediary to bring the right students and corporations together, both providing the industry with the next generation of talent and offering students a satisfying, meaningful and well-paying livelihood.

The ERI@ODU envisions the creation of the next generation body of knowledge in risk management for current and future systems and organizations characterized by uncertainty, emergence, complexity and interdependence.
