Women's Only Swim

In an attempt to be inclusive to all religious traditions on campus, we offer Women's Only Swim hour giving female students the chance to swim at their leisure, while honoring the basic tenets of their religion.

Sundays, 12pm - 1pm

Take a Dip

Recreation and Wellness offers quality aquatics programming for all Old Dominion University students, faculty/staff and Alumni members. Although our 25yd x 20yd swimming pool is the home of our ODU Monarch Swim Team, it is also available to our students as well as faculty /staff members.

We offer a variety of programs to include water fitness, Red Cross Lifeguard Certification courses, and Red Cross Private and Group Swimming Lessons.

Junior Lifeguarding NEW for Summer 2013!

Want to be a lifeguard but not old enough yet to enroll in an American Red Cross Lifeguarding training course? Get a jump start on your future as a lifeguard with our Junior Lifeguard program! The Junior Lifeguard program helps kids build a foundation of knowledge, attitude, and skills that are needed to be a responsible volunteer and future lifeguard. Participants learn skills such as swimming, leadership, rescue response, drowning prevention, professionalism, and volunteerism. This course is meant to provide a foundation of aquatic knowledge and leadership skills and attitudes for future successful completion of the Red Cross Lifeguarding course. Participants are not required to master or perfectly execute skills. They should learn techniques and build stamina during this program. The Junior Lifeguarding course does not certify participants in First Aid, CPR or AED or as a lifeguard. The Junior Lifeguarding Program is for children ages 11-12 who have completed 5th grade. Three sessions are being offered and the cost is $50 per week.


Swim Lessons

Private Swim Instruction is meant for those who are looking for one-on-one instruction from a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. All Lessons are 30 minutes in length and time will be determined based on the availability of the participant and instructor. All lessons must be cancelled with the instructor at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled lesson time. Participants can choose six, twelve, or eighteen lessons.

Fees: Six lessons - $70, twelve lessons - $130, eighteen lessons - $195

Adult Beginner: These American Red Cross group lessons are for adults wanting to be active in the water. Participants will learn how to float, submerge completely, propel themselves through the water on both the front and the back, and the basic front and back crawl strokes. The goal is to be able to swim a specified length (25 yards) and feel comfortable in deep water. The class is designed to prepare participants not only to experience swimming, but to safely participate in various recreational water activities.

Adult Intermediate: This class is for the well-adjusted swimmer. The general goals include increased proficiency in the basic strokes, development of more advanced strokes and turns, greater understanding of safety, and the ability to use water as a medium for recreation and fitness.

Parent/Child: This American Red Cross Course is for participants 6 months to 3 years, 5 months. Parents are in the water with the child and focus is on comfort level and water adjustment. Certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors participate in trainings and shadow teaching sessions before administering a class of their own. Lessons are designed to run in sessions consisting of 30 minute lessons with five minutes of wrap-up and parent discussion. The ratio of students to teachers is kept below the American Red Cross recommendation of 1:10; preferably 1:4-6.

Preschool: This American Red Cross Course is for participants 3 years, 5 months to 6 years of age. Focus is on water adjustment and beginning skills. Certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors participate in trainings and shadow teaching sessions before administering a class of their own. Lessons are designed to run in sessions consisting of 30 minute lessons with five minutes of wrap-up and parent discussion. The ratio of students to teachers is kept below the American Red Cross recommendation of 1:10; preferably 1:4-6. Cost per week is $35 per child.

Certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors participate in trainings and shadow teaching sessions before administering a class of their own. Lessons are designed to run in sessions consisting of 30 minute lessons with five minutes of wrap-up and parent discussion. The ratio of students to teachers is kept below the American Red Cross recommendation of 1:10; preferably 1:4-6.

Prerequisites: Participants need to be able to swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side. Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe kick and glide sequence. Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs. Show a level of comfort by floating on the back for 30 seconds. Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water. Cost per week is $50 per child.

Lifeguard Certification

Lifeguard Training

All courses take place Fridays: 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course

This course will teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.

Refunds will not be issued unless the class is cancelled or full.

SRC reserves the right the cancel classes for which fewer than six students have registered.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding REVIEW Cetification Course

This course will teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.

Refunds will not be issued unless the class is cancelled or full.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Certification Course

The purpose of this course is to train instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifeguarding and Shallow Water attendant (all including first aid), Lifeguard Management, CPR?AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Blood Borne Pathogens Training.

American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid for the Workplace, Schools, and Community Adult Classes

Teaches participants to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults; perform first aid for cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, bleeding, sprains and strains; and treat sudden illnesses.
