The University Seal
Legend has it that you should never walk across the University Seal located on Kaufman Mall. If you do so, you will never graduate from Old Dominion University. This respect for the University Seal should also apply to those placed on the floor of certain academic buildings on campus. However, the graduation legend does not apply if you walk across one of those seals.
Spirit Fridays
A word of mouth tradition that eventually was enacted by President Roseann Runte and resolved by the Student Senate. All members of the University community are asked to wear either school colors (blue and silver) or ODU apparel every Friday regardless if they are on or off-campus.
Members of the spirit crew will be randomly sent out throughout campus on certain Fridays rewarding those who observe this tradition with a prize. If you are "caught" wearing ODU colors or apparel, you might just win a prize; so be sure to wear ODU colors or apparel every Friday this academic year!
Painting of the Paws
An annual tradition on-campus where students are invited to come and paint/touch-up the paws on the sidewalks of campus. Big Blue has traveled the campus extensively and has left his mark at various buildings and residence halls. To show the beauty and different areas of campus, we help preserve these paws so students can see where the Monarchs roam while at Old Dominion University.
Ice Cream and Cake
During the second half of home basketball games at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, the whole arena uses a time out to take part in a one of a kind cheer/dance.
