New to the University

Orientation

The Fall 2011 orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The orientation is mandatory for all new international students. Please plan ahead and make sure you arrive in Norfolk, VA before the orientation day.

Arrival Assistance

Arrival assistance may include transportation from the airport or bus terminal in Norfolk and/or placement in temporary housing. These services are offered during specific times before the beginning of the semester and are only available prior to International Student Orientation. Please note that the arrival assistance will only be available depending upon the availability and must be requested at least 7 days prior to your arrival in Norfolk. VA.

As soon as we received your application for arrival assistance, the Office of Intercultural Relations will arrange for a volunteer or Carey Transportation Services to meet you at your port of arrival and take you to your pre-arranged housing accommodation, or to temporary accommodations provided by volunteer host or OIR only. The pick up service is free for only new international students.

When you request temporary accommodation, you may be placed to stay at our on-campus housing or to stay with a volunteer host, depending on the availability. All temporary accommodations will be shared! You will share a bedroom and a bathroom with other students.

If you receive assistance from a student organization, a member of that organization will pick you up at your port of arrival and/or provide you with temporary accommodation, depending on what service(s) you requested. Temporary accommodation provided by volunteer will resemble a home-stay or host family setting. You will stay with a student in his or her own apartment and most likely, you will share a bathroom and may sleep in a spare bedroom, or on a couch or air mattress.
