Ballroom, jazz, contemporary ballet and modern dance choreography by ODU faculty members and students will be featured during five upcoming performances of the University Dance Theatre's annual spring concert.

The University Theater (Hampton Boulevard and 47th St.) will host performances Wed., April 15 through Fri., April 17 at 8 p.m. and on Sat., April 18 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Highlighting the program are two works by adjunct professor and guest artist Katie Iacono. "Tie Shopping With My Father," with its reflections on the sport of wrestling, draws from Iacono's master's thesis. The work was recently performed as part of the American College Dance Association at Towson University.

Another Iacono work, a performance installation, will take place during intermission on stage, in the seating area and lobby.

Assistant Professor Megan Thompson will restage "Thresholds Crossed (Reconfiguration)." Choreographed in 2006, "Thresholds Crossed" is "a fusion of East and West that explores the events, ideology and humanistic issues that link the U.S. with the former Soviet Union and contemporary Russia," according to the Maida Withers Dance Construction Company: "Colored by the implied humor of propaganda art, old scars of the Russian gulag system and our war on terror, 'Thresholds Crossed' actively explores moments when society crosses the line."

Thompson and dance partner Jen Stone were original cast members in the production and have been commissioned to create a new duet using excerpts from Part I and Part III of the original work.

Adjunct professor and guest artist Ashley Whitlinger will premiere her new work "woman and the sea (engulf me)," a group work exploring the links of women and the sea in mythology, literature and physiology. It also addresses the ritual of everyday responsibilities that threaten to overwhelm women.

Also on the program is a new, untitled work by Joni Petre-Scholz that is set to music by Rene Aubry. It explores expansive and contemporary movement while based in ballet technique.

Other new works will debut from adjunct faculty members Danny Charles and Cara Goodwin as well as selected undergraduate students.
