Delivery Modes

Courses are offered via several course delivery modes in order to provide flexibility and to extend higher education opportunities to students in Virginia and beyond. The modes are: interactive television, video streaming, and online. It is important that students understand the course requirements and expectations of mixed media courses before enrolling in the course.

Interactive Television

Interactive television courses are broadcast from ODU's main campus in Norfolk, VA by satellite to numerous distance learning locations. Students meet in a traditional classroom at a distant site location where the broadcast is received, and must be present at the site at the specific class time. With one-way video/two-way audio, students see the broadcast and can speak with the instructor and other students across the country in real time. Some courses are broadcast live using two-way digital videoconferencing technology. Unlike the one-way video/two-way audio mode, the faculty member can also view the students in their remote environment. While the courses are broadcast live, videotape archives of all classes are available until the end of the semester. Tests/examinations taken by students enrolled in an interactive television courses are administered and proctored at their site location.

Video Streaming

Video streaming is a means of delivering a live course to students by computer. Using a computer, students may participate from any location; however, the course is live and does meet at specific class times. Students can view the instructor; however, the instructor cannot view the students. Interaction takes place in real-time by use of a Virtual Instructional Assistant (VIA). Tests/examinations taken by student enrolled in a video streaming course are proctored at an ODU associated site or, with permission, at an approved outside institution.

Online Classes

Online courses are especially convenient and flexible for students. Courses and programs are available at the student's discretion, accessible at any time of day or night from any location with Internet access. There are no regularly scheduled class times, though course material and assignments may have specific completion deadlines. Course material is accessed from a course web site or through a course management system such as Blackboard. Typically, students taking pure web courses take exams and tests over the Internet, though proctoring tests/exams may be required.
