Class of 2023: Evan Dorman Focuses on Accessibility in Libraries

When Evan Dorman enrolled in Old Dominion University’s master’s program in library and information studies in the fall of 2022, he didn’t know he’d grow passionate about accessibility for people with disabilities – so passionate that he co-wrote two papers on the subject and presented the results at conferences in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and London last October.

CIEES Announces New Executive Director

Dr. Jonna Bobzien has accepted the role of executive director of CIEES. She has served ODU as the Communication Disorders and Special Education Department Chairperson and as the Special Education Graduate Program Director.

MonarchTeach Celebrates 10 Years of Excellence

This year marks the ten-year anniversary of MonarchTeach at ODU, a unique collaboration between the DCEPS and the College of Sciences. Since 2013, students majoring in mathematics or science have been able to receive teacher licensure while still earning their degree in their content area - while helping to combat nationwide teacher shortages.

CMHD Takes Camp Webber to New Heights

In the summer of 2023, the Center for Movement, Health, & Disability (CMHD) implemented Camp Webber, an overnight sports camp for youth who are blind or visually impaired. Directed by HMS doctoral scholar Ally Keene, and supported by 11 other ODU undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, and faculty, Camp Webber is held at Camp

Birchwood in Chugiak Alaska each summer. This program will offer the opportunity for campers to participate in adapted sports, meet new friends, and enjoy an overnight camp experience in the wilderness of Alaska. This free sports camp is supported by generous gifts from the ME Webber foundation. If you would like to help us make opportunities like these possible for our students and community, please consider a gift to support our ongoing efforts in education, innovation, and community engagement.

Old Dominion University Joins Elite Ranks with UCWHRE Membership

The Workforce and Organizational Development Ph.D. program has achieved a significant milestone by becoming an institutional member of the University Council for Workforce & Human Resources Education (UCWHRE). UCWHRE, is renowned for its mission to shape the future of workforce education and human resource development through policy improvement and educational practices in the United States.

Dr. Chaniece Winfield Earns Callahan Leadership Award

Dr. Chaniece Winfield is the 2023 recipient of the Callahan Leadership Award with the National Association of Addiction Professionals—a competitive and prestigious national award. Since 2013, Dr. Winfield has been an educator at ODU specializing in addiction education and clinical practitioner competency in the substance use and addiction field.

Katelyn Makovec Named 2023 VAHPERD Teacher of the Year for College/University

Makovec, who has been with ODU since 2017, has been a driving force in HMS. Her commitment to teaching, professional development, and community engagement has set her apart as an exemplary educator and mentor.

Dr. Bol wins Barry J. Zimmerman Award for Outstanding Contributions

The award focuses on recognizing a researcher who has developed a programmatic area of research that has made a strong theoretical, empirical, and applied impact on the field.

EFL Faculty Members Earn ECMCF Grant

Drs. Michelle & James Bartlett were awarded a grant worth just under $1,000,000 through the ECMC Foundation for Postsecondary Career and Technical Research Fellows.

Dr. Mamo earns Presidential Fellowship

ODU Students, Staff Share Resources While Educating on the Dangers of

‘Fast-Fashion’

Nic Schmoyer, a 3rd year doctoral student in CHS, has been named one of the SACES Research and Best Practice Grant recipients of this year. This award funds innovative best practices and research studies related to counselor education and supervision. Nic received this grant for his dissertation study titled "Supervision Needs of Novice Behavioral Health Clinicians in Integrated Primary Care Settings: A Delphi Study."

Since 2015, the MerMADE STEM Toys4KIDS project has been brightening the holiday season for children at CHKD. This year, the industrious students of the Industrial Technology program have outdone themselves by creating an innovative range of STEM toys. The 2023 collection features a variety of toys and puzzles, including marshmallow catapults, all made from eco-friendly materials. These toys are the product of the students' hard work in the STEM Education Production Lab, led by Mr. Basim Matrood.

Valor to Vulnerability: ODU Veterans’ Journey to Mental Wellness Advocacy

Four student veterans in Counseling and Human Services are changing the narratives and making a difference for mental health in Hampton Roads.

News Bites

Dr. Emily Goodman-Scott participated in a panel with the ACA Governing Council, particularly talking about the needs of youth in our schools—ACES and CSI, discussing topics around serving LGBTQIA+ youth.

Dr. Jinhee Kim recently published a paper titled My teammate is AI: understanding students’ perceptions of student-AI collaboration in Asia Pacific Journal of Education. Co-authored with Dr. Cho at Seoul National University, the paper explored students’ perceptions and experiences about student-AI collaboration and provided implications on the design of educational AI and AI literacy education. At the National Association of Career and Technical Education Research conference in Phoenix, our faculty & students were met with amazing success. Dave Macholz earned the runner-up spot for Most Outstanding Poster Presentation, Kesha Valentine earned the Most Outstanding Dissertation Award, Dr. James Bartlett was elected as ACTER Ambassador-at-Large, Dr. Michelle Bartlett was selected as ACTER President Elect, and Dr. Mickey Kosloski received the Meritorious Service Award.

A CCL Program alumnus, Dr. Bill Fiege was named the new President of Brightpoint Community College in Chester, Virginia.

Dr. Helen Crompton served as a panelist at a symposium hosted by President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D. Striking the Balance: AI Automation and Human Interaction in Teaching and Learning.

The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) certificate program ranked #5 for the 2023 - Best Online Graduate Certificates in Psychology Programs from CounselingPsychology.org.
