Old Dominion's Darden College of Education is a partner in the $2.4 million Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant awarded to Newport News Public Schools (NNPS). ODU faculty is developing the following four components:

  • A 12-hour graduate certificate program on Military Child and Families for practicing teachers, counselors and assistant principals; The TEAMS initiative in collaboration with the Darden College of Education developed The Graduate Certificate Program for Military Connected Families. The certificate program which enrolls educators, counselors and administrators who serve military families and children, utilizes a comprehensive assessment process to help schools identify where they are on the road to becoming 'military-conscious' schools.
  • An in-service professional development program for counselors, led by Kathleen Levingston and Laurie Craigen from the Department of Counseling and Human Services
  • An assessment tool called the Military Consciousness Awareness Toolkit, or Mil-CAT, to help schools and school divisions determine strengths and needs as they provide support to military children and their families, led by Joanna Garner of TCEP
  • A professional development and technical assistance program for instructional coaches in math, led by Melva Grant, an assistant professor in the Department of STEM Education and Professional
