James Onate, PhD

Dr. Oñate received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Florida, and his Master's and Doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He serves as an Assistant Professor in the Post-Certification Graduate Athletic Training Program and in the undergraduate Exercise Science program. He is the Director of the newly established Sports Medicine Research Laboratory designed to conduct motion analysis and sports medicine research projects. His main teaching responsibilities include human anatomy, kinesiology and motor learning/control concepts related to sports medicine rehabilitation. His primary research interests focus on neuromuscular aspects of lower extremity injury and factors to aid in the development of injury prevention programs. Main research focus is on analyzing various aspects of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, gender related risk factors associated with ACL injury, prevention of ACL injury utilizing a combined motor learning/control and biomechanical approach, and military sports medicine issues. Current research includes investigating predictive factors for ACL injury, biomechanical comparison of ACL injury prevention interventions, military ROTC baseline screening measures to reduce lower extremity injury and investigating the influence of augmented feedback on motor skill acquisition. He resides in Virginia Beach with his wife Debra and his son, Matthew.

Jessica Walter, ATC 

Jessica Walter, ATC is a lab manager and teaching assistant for EXSC 322 (Anatomical Kinesiology and Human anatomy).  Jessica completed her undergraduate education at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD.  During the spring of her senior year she did an internship at Western Carolina University.  Her future goals are to obtain a PhD and to work as clinical coordinator or program director in an undergraduate program.  Other interests include, Playing sports, going to the movies, and going to the beach.

 

 

 Joshua Wade, ATC

Josh currently serves as one of the Lab Mangers and Teaching Assistants for EXSC 322 (Anatomical Kinesiology and Human Anatomy).  Josh completed his undergraduate education at Frostburg State University.  While completing his senior year at Frostburg State, Josh served as the Head Athletic Trainer for Beall High School located in Frostburg, Maryland.  Josh has worked with a variety of athletes in settings such as college and high school as well as athletic camps for adolescents.  His future career goals include obtaining a PhD in a related field.  Interests outside of graduate school include football, basketball, and mountain biking.

 
 

 Shanon Chau

Shanon Chau is a graduate assistant in the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory and Human Performance Laboratory.  He received his Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Old Dominion University, and is currently working on a Master’s degree in Exercise Science and Wellness.  Shanon plans on pursuing a Ph.D. after the completion of his Master’s degree.  His specific interests include exercise physiology and biomechanics.

 

 Bryan M. Multzer

Bryan M. Mutzer is an undergraduate research assistant.  He is 26 years old and is originally from Philadelphia, PA and currently resides in Norfolk, VA.   Bryan served six years in the United States Navy specializing in SONAR and Anti-Terrorism.  He is a junior majoring in exercise science with a minor in psychology and is the president of the ODU exercise science club.  He is a certified personal trainer.  Interests include strength, conditioning and biomechanics.  His future goals are to attend old dominion and major in exercise science with emphasis in biomechanics and to go on to a PhD.  He wants to conduct research in sports medicine and teach at the collegiate level.

 

 Danielle Simlick

Danielle is an undergraduate research assistant and is a junior majoring in exercise science.  Her future goals are to attend PT school and to get her PhD.  She is planning to do an internship next year with the London basketball team.
