Richard C. (rickO) Overbaugh has taught courses in Instructional Technology and Intructional Design including instructional design theory, instructional systems design, applied instructional design, multimedia design and development, curriculum design, visual/graphic communication, e-Learning and educational technology integration at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
C urrent research interests focus on the efficacy of instructional strategies and collaborative tools in distributed teaching/learning environments, and hierarchical assessment of knowledge acquisition. Rick designed a framework to coordinate and guide the development and subsequent investigation of educational environments based on certain aspects of the Sloan-C pillars of quality education. He has published more than 30 papers, counting 4 book chapters, and presented over 60 research papers. He has co-authored and co-presented with more than a dozen of his graduate students and a post-doctoral research assistant.
Dr. Overbaugh is, or has been Principal or Co-principal investigator or participant in 17 grants totaling over five million dollars. Recent grant activities include serving as lead investigator for two seven-year No Child Left Behind Enhancing Education ThroughTechnology (E2T2) federal grants (Consortia for Interactive Instruction and the 4-Rivers Educational Technology Consortium) concluded in 2009 and another American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Enhancing Education ThroughTechnology (ARRA-E2T2) with the Hampton Roads Virtual Learning Center in 2010-11. Rick was also a co-PI for a competitive work award from the Marine Corps resulting from his work with the Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center.
