Richard C. (rickO) Overbaugh teaches courses in Instructional Design & Technology including instructional systems design, instructional design theory, applied instructional design, multimedia design and development, curriculum design, visual/graphic communication and educational technology integration at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
C urrent research interests focus on the efficacy of instructional strategies and collaborative tools in distributed teaching/learning environments, and hierarchical assessment of knowledge acquisition. He is also interested in the development and support of communities of inquiry in distance learning environments, an area in which Rick and a number of his students are currently conducting research. Rick designed a framework to coordinate and guide the development and subsequent investigation of educational environments based on certain aspects of the Sloan-C pillars of quality education. He has published more than 25 papers, counting 4 book chapters, and presented over 40 research papers. He has co-authored and co-presented with more than a dozen of his graduate students.
Dr. Overbaugh is, or has been Principal or Co-principal investigator of 16 grants totaling 3.7 million dollars. Recent grant activities include two No Child Left Behind Federal Educational Technology grants awarded to two Educational Technology Consortiums in Virginia, and a competitive work award from the Marine Corps resulting from Rick's work with the Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center.
