Darden
Computer Labs
1. Where
is a computer lab that I can use for my assignments? What are
the open hours?
Response: The lab
schedules are posted two weeks in advance on http://web.odu.edu/educ/darden_labs under "Mac

Response: The lab assistants will be happy to help you
make clips or answer your questions.
3. What
if I have never used a Mac computer?
Response: It only takes 5 or 10 minutes to learn
the differences between Windows and Mac computer
4. Should
I have a Mac formatted floppy disk when I use a Mac computer?
Response: Yes. If you only have IBM formatted disks that's o.k.
Just put a floppy in the Mac computer's drive, click "Special" then "Erase
Disk." You will see a box that shows the disk has a DOS format. Simply
click to the right of that box and you will see a "Macintosh" option. Select
the Mac Format option and proceed to erase your floppy. The computer will
format your disk for the Macintosh environment. Be sure to mark your disk
as "Mac Format" so you won't forget which is which.
5. Why
can't I use both a Macintosh and a PC for an assignment?
Response: Because the computer types have differing
operating systems. You can usually open your PC work on a Mac
computer and work on it, but you must not then take the files
back to a PC to open them. This will make the files unreadable
in both systems. You definitely can not open Mac files on a
PC. It is best to stick with the system you start with and
to use a properly formatted disk for the system you are using.
Otherwise you could loose your work.
6.
Can I save to my ODU student folder from a Mac computer?
Response: Yes. All you do is click the small
icon in the upper left of the iMac screen that looks like a little
tree. Then enter your student ID and password.
7. Can
I use my home PC even if the instructor teaches in a Mac computer
lab?
Response: Only if you start and finish your work
on your PC. If you start working on a Macintosh, you must not
switch to Windows.
8. Should
I purchase any of the software so I can do my assignments at
home?
Response: It is not required. The homework computer labs
have night and week-end open hours.
