Course Competencies for Web Authoring I



Use the following competencies to determine whether or not you have the skills to bypass this course. If you are close, and are confident that you can self study to meet missing competencies while taking other classes then you may want to bypass this courses.
Main Compentencies

· Mastery of HTML 1.0 code and use of Graphical Authoring Environment (e.g., Dreamweaver)
· Understanding of page design principles for the WWW
· Introduction to extensions of HTML, including graphics, JavaScript and cgi
· Application of the World Wide Web to educational needs
Programming
· Ability to code HTML using a text editor such as HomeSite or BBEdit
· Viewing code on existing web pages
· Creating the basic HTML document structure
· Understand and apply HTML formatting tags
· Understand and apply the use of links and anchors, with relative and absolute paths
· Basic graphic formats and compression rules
· Use of tables
· Use of forms
· Understand DOCTYPES
· Understand well-formed coding conventions
· Ability to use FTP for file upload
· Understanding of UNIX file server conventions
Design Principles
· Document Structure vs. Document Layout
· Creating communicative page organizational schemes
· Navigation needs
· Scan-able content
· Basic effective use of graphics
Extensions of HTML
· Simple JavaScript (at least image swapping and form validation)
· The role of cgi with form processing
· Advanced graphics, such as Flash
Use of Web in Education
· Organizing educational content
· Application of basic instructional design principles
· Structuring a course support environment
