Scholarly Pursuit

In China, I was a teacher of English in schools ranging from high school to college. Cross-cultural communication and teaching English were my professional interests before I came to ODU. Since I started my doctoral program, I have become more interested in multicultural education and classroom teaching. I am working on more the theoretical aspects that include foundations of education, and instructional design and technology for my doctoral program.

Professional Activities and History

I was born in Hebei, China. I started to teach English in a public school in 1984 when I graduated from Hebei Teachers University. In 1986, I moved to Langfang Teachers College to teach English. In 1994, I was admitted into graduate program in Hebei Teachers University, where I worked as a teacher of English. I earned my M. A. in English language and literature in 1997. I have been awarded several prizes for my teaching excellence. My professional experience includes working with a United Nations education program in China (1998-1999), a teaching grant from my college (1999-2000), and with a U.S. education program, ACTT Now with Brunswick County Schools (2000-2001). In the fall of 2003, I started my doctoral program in Urban Education at Old Dominion University.

Background

For most of my past, I have been attending schools as both a student and teacher. I enjoyed being a student most of the time but found there were some not so enjoyable times as well, and I find this to be true as a teacher as well. Teaching has enriched my life and inspires me to go further in my professional development and education. My teaching experiences in working with students and classroom teaching have been an enriching experience. I am enjoying my teaching assistant job for ECI 301—Social and Cultural Foundations of Education. I enjoy reading literature, singing and staying with friends. I am a novice at using technology but I believe that by taking an advanced ID& T class I’ll be increasing both my knowledge and experience in technology related areas. I want to explore how I can combine ID&T with my current doctorial program. I am quite a social being and enjoy making new acquaintances and look forward to joining the community of learners in ODU’s ID & T program.
