I am a chemistry teacher at Chantilly High School (northern VA, about 22 miles west of Washington). I worked as a chemist (about 25 years ago!) up in Joisey (Bayonne, 14a) but left to have kids and stayed home for the next dozen or so years. We moved to Chantilly in 1991- I started subbing, decided I liked it, and started teaching at Chantilly with a provisional license in 1996.
Now, with my older daughter a junior at college and my younger a junior in high school, I realized I could think about what was next for me. I didn’t think they would take me in the astronaut program, so it had to be Instructional Design! Really, I am looking for the right formulas for teaching our kids, their lives are so busy, stressed, and distracted. With SOL’s, and NCLB (ask any teacher) we have to meet standards. There are ways to do that without constant drill, drill, drill. I think.
I see Instructional Design as a way to solve problems that arise when our students needs change but their educational system doesn’t. In education, one size doesn’t fit all!
