PERSONAL BACKGROUND

I am an Army brat and was born in Ft. Riley, Kansas…GO JAYHAWKS!  My father was career military, so I moved constantly over the first 18 years of my life.  I’ve lived in Texas, Kansas, Virginia…(many times), Pennsylvania, and Germany.  We were lucky enough to be stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA. the entire length of my high-school years, thank goodness!  I went to high school at Denbigh High in Newport News and from there attended Virginia Tech…GO HOKIES!  I earned both my B.S. and M.A.Ed. at Tech and am a die hard Hokie fan! I currently live at “The Beach”. 

I’ve traveled extensively both while my father was in the military and while working for ODU. I’ve been to France, Cyprus, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Spain, Grand Caymans, St. Barths, Switzerland, Austria, Korea, Thailand, and probably a few other places I can’t remember off the top of my head.  OH, yeah…and Turkey…I was in Turkey in October 2000….do any of you remember what happened over there then?  The bombing of the USS Cole happened…yes, and I was traveling alone!  YIKES!  But all ended well and I never once felt threatened in anyway…and actually, I would have never known if I hadn’t been watching the BBC.  Turkey is a beautiful country!

WORK BACKGROUND

  • I worked as a Vet assistant when I was in high school. 
  • When I went to Tech I worked for the Mounted Patrol.
  • I worked as a race horse trainer…incredible…
  • I was a pool girl for a short while…fun!
  • I worked for Tidewater Tech in Chesapeake.
  • I started working for ODU in early 1996 and have been here ever since.
  • 96-98 – Academic Advisor in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • 98-01 –Director of Undergraduate Advising in the College of Business and Public Admin.
  • 01-04 – Director of Asynchronous Programs and Corporate Development.

ACADEMIC INTERESTS

This semester, Fall 2004, is my first semester taking a course in ID&T, thus I am still trying to grasp and gather a wealth of information to determine where I’d like to focus…but thus far I am really interested in student satisfaction and learning effectiveness in online programs and how students learn in different modes of delivery.  I come with a student affairs background, my Masters was in College Student Personnel, so I have worked with many different student development theories in traditional settings and am finding the theories of student learning in online environments most intriguing.

OTHER STUPH

I participate in Triathlons and Duathlons and find that this keeps me pretty healthy both physically and emotionally!  Although I do have to say that the swim part of Tri’s is the worst leg for me…can’t stand swimming in the ocean…I guess it’s that whole ‘Jaws’ era thingy…….duh..na..duh..na..duh..na… I love to bike, hike, scuba dive, lounge on the beach, ski, mountain bike, horseback ride, and have fun with my friends.  Oh, and I LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!  GO HOKIES…and I LOVE THE COWBOYS…GO BIG D!  I think that about covers it…J
